The primary purpose of FoMC is to elicit support and make representations to the appropriate authorities in order to encourage the good management of Midsummer Common. It can be a very enjoyable place to visit.

The Common is constantly under pressure because it hosts a wide range of public events which, by their very nature, have a negative impact on the ecology of this ancient green space. Heavy vehicles have caused soil compaction resulting in poor drainage and surface water. The same vehicles have damaged the meadow grassland and the trees. The general condition of the Common had deteriorated over recent years - it is beginning to have a "neglected feel". Cattle grazing is sporadic and grass mowing infrequent. Thistles, nettles and brambles have invaded large areas. Many of the trees are old or diseased and need replacing.

Midsummer Common is a major throughway for pedestrians and cyclists. It is also a place for exercise, play, relaxation and the walking of dogs. All would doubtless like to find it in a clean and tidy state. But this is dependent on the actions of others.

Dog fouling and litter can be a problem. So can construction works and the illegal entry and parking of vehicles. Camping and fires happen in spite of local byelaws. FoMC would like to see all of these problems better regulated and enforced.

Doing this would bring much joy to others.

FoMC set out to improve the management and condition of the Common by working closely with the City Council. We instigated a policy of regular walks around the Common with Council officials to identify problems so that they are dealt with in a timely manner. Some progress has already been made and it is hoped that major improvements will soon take place. We are working together with the Council in trying to improve the quality of events held on the Common. This should benefit both attendees and local residents.

We would like to encourage any resident of Cambridge to join us and play a part in the development of this precious Cambridge green space. If you would like any further information about FoMC membership, please speak to one of the Committee Members or contact us.
